Amid the threat of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, first the United States, and then the UK, officially announced the start of evacuating the employees of the country's Embassy in Kyiv.
"Some embassy staff are being evacuated from Kyiv in response to the threat from Russia. The British Embassy remains open and will continue to work," the statement reads.
However, the leadership of the European Union does not yet see the need to withdraw their diplomats and their families from Ukraine.
"We do not plan to do what the United States does because we do not see any specific reasons for this," Josep Borrell, EU foreign policy chief, stated.
He added that at the moment there was a negotiation process with Russia and while it continued there was no need to evacuate the diplomats.
Context. On January 24, the US Department of State announced the voluntary evacuation of its diplomats from Ukraine. Their family members were ordered to leave the country.
