The administration of US President Joe Biden stated that the Russian Federation could resort to a full-scale invasion of Ukrainian territory at any point.
"Our view is this is an extremely dangerous situation. We’re now at a stage where Russia could at any point launch an attack in Ukraine," White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki stated during the briefing.
She explained that at present, the United States had not ruled out any option from previously proposed sanctions, including disconnecting the Russian Federation from SWIFT and measures against Nord Stream 2.
Psaki added that Washington had been aware of the Kremlin's intentions to evacuate its diplomats from Ukraine in late December and early January. According to her, this fact may indicate that Russia is at a stage when it is ready to launch an attack on Ukraine at any point.
Context. Psaki also recalled that US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Then he will have talks with the representatives of Germany, France, and Great Britain. The meeting, according to Reuters, will focus on the readiness of these countries, together with the United States, to impose serious sanctions against the Russian Federation in case of escalating the conflict on the Ukrainian border.
After that, the Secretary of State will meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. According to Psaki, Blinken is going to convince the Minister of the need to resolve the situation through diplomacy. Whether Russia suffers serious economic consequences depends on President Putin and the Russians, the Press Secretary added.
