The 63rd day of the war against the Russian invaders continues in Ukraine. The Page has compiled business, political, and economic news that will help you learn more about the situation in a country that has been fighting for its right to exist for more than two months.

The major developments of the day are:

  • Russian troops mined Kamiana Mohyla (literally: "stone grave"), a monument of geology and archeology of world importance, located in the Zaporizhzhya region near Melitopol. Spokesperson of the Zaporizhzhya Regional Military Administration Ivan Ariefiev told this to Radio Svoboda. Kamiana Mohyla is a cult complex, the only place in all of Eastern Europe where rock art from the late Paleolithic period to the Middle Ages has been preserved. Also, the Kamiana Mohyla’s hill is a unique natural site in the form of the remains of the sandstone from the Sarmatian Sea of the Tertiary period.
  • The Russian occupiers twice attacked the city of Avdiivka with phosphorus shells, Pavlo Kyrylenko, head of the Donetsk Regional Military Administration, informed. According to him, following the second shelling, the occupiers launched an airstrike on Avdiivka, hitting a high-rise building. Kyrylenko noted that there was at least one injured person.
  • Over the past day, Ukrainian defenders in the zone of the Operational Command "South" attacked Russian positions on Zmiinyi Island (Snake Island). There are reports about the hit on the control point, the destruction of the Strela-10 anti-aircraft missile system. The losses of the Russian fascists are being updated," the report posted on Facebook reads.

Politics

  • Australia is sending six 155mm M777 light towed howitzers and rounds to them to Ukraine. This was reported by the Ambassador of Ukraine to Australia Vasyl Myroshnichenko. This support comes after a request from the United States and the Ukrainian Ambassador to Australia to provide heavy artillery and ammunition to the Ukrainian Armed Forces over Russia's intensified offensive in the Donbas. This additional military assistance will further support Ukraine in its response to Russia's brutal, ruthless and illegal invasion," Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Australian Defense Minister Peter Dutton said in a press release.
  • On the basis of the European Command of the US Armed Forces in Stuttgart, a control center was opened to coordinate shipments of arms to Ukraine. The new structure in Germany will coordinate and step up the shipments of military assistance to Ukraine from more than 40 countries. In the European Command Control Center of Ukraine, in addition to American specialists, there are also employees from 15 countries.
  • Employees of the Austrian embassy in Ukraine returned to Kyiv last week, the Austrian Foreign Ministry said. "We stand united with the people of Ukraine, who fell victim to an unprecedented military aggression by Russia. As an important sign of our unwavering solidarity with Ukraine, members of our Embassy returned to Kyiv last week. Thanks to our staff for your efforts & dedication!" the Foreign Ministry tweeted on Wednesday.
  • Representatives of the US Embassy in Ukraine are preparing to return and resume work in Kyiv. "Great to be back! Today, members of the Embassy team traveled to Lviv to meet with key partners, including the MFA of Ukraine. The visit was a first step ahead of more regular travel in the immediate future. Preparations are underway to resume Kyiv operations as soon as possible," the US Embassy tweeted.

Economy

  • As of April 22, Ukraine's international reserves amounted to almost $27 billion, they are at the same level as at the beginning of the war. This happened, first of all, due to the support of international financial institutions that exceeded $4 billion, Kyrylo Shevchenko, Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine, said. Ukraine spends its reserves mainly on securing critical imports. Another cost item of the reserves is the servicing of the public debt that Ukraine has not stopped and does not plan to stop. Shevchenko called it "the only right strategy."
  • The federal government of Canada will amend its sanctions law to allow the redistribution of seized and sanctioned foreign assets as compensation for victims or to help rebuild a foreign nation after a war.

Business

  • As a result of the relocation of enterprises from the regions of hostilities in the Lviv region, more than 1,000 new jobs have appeared, Maksym Kozytskyi, Head of the Regional Military Administration, informed. "We are actively engaged in business relocation: more than 700 applications, more than 100 enterprises agreed in the relocation process. 45 additionally applied for a relocation and are waiting in the wings. More than 50 enterprises have already started working — more than a thousand new jobs have been created," Kozytskyi noted.
