On the night of Wednesday, August 23, Russia made another attack on Danube ports. Using Shahed drones, it destroyed 13,000 tons of grain, according to Oleksandr Kubrakov, Minister for Communities, Territories, and Infrastructure Development of Ukraine.

Quote"Another Russian attack on the Danube ports. 13,000 tons of grain were destroyed by Russia as a result of a Shahed attack on the port of Izmail. Several private grain terminals and warehouses and cargo infrastructure were damaged at once. The agricultural products were intended to be shipped to Egypt and Romania," he said.

The attack caused the export capacity of the port of Izmail to drop by 15%. This is the eighth attack on the port infrastructure made after Russia withdrew from the Grain Initiative.

Why do the Russians attack the ports in the Odesa region?

The ports of Izmail and Reni have become the primary Ukrainian export gateways to European countries under the Russian malicious blockade in 2022, said Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal. Even under the full-fledged war, Ukraine managed to increase cargo turnover exactly through the Danube river ports.

At the end of July 2023, the Russians attacked the port of Reni with Shahed drones. Three grain warehouses were destroyed, and reservoirs for other types of cargo were damaged. A total of 270,000 tons of grain have been destroyed by Russian attacks on the ports during the last month.

Earlier, The Page reported that the first vessel had left the port of Odesa after the termination of the Black Sea Grain Initiative. This was the Joseph Schulte, a 300-meter container ship.
