The US government has announced the imposition of new sanctions against Russia if it acts aggressively against Ukraine. Such concerns relate to the actions of the Russian Federation near the borders of Ukraine.
This was stated by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in an interview with NBC.
Sanctions against Russia due to hostilities
According to Blinken, US President Joe Biden clearly voiced his position on this issue. In particular, the US Secretary of State held a number of telephone conversations with his colleagues from Germany, France, and the UK on building up the military presence of Russian troops near Ukraine.
At the same time, the Kremlin continues to assure that Russian military units are moving through the territory of the Russian Federation and do not pose a threat to other states, and they also talk about Kyiv's provocative actions.
Disconnecting the RF from SWIFT
In particular, the Chairman of the European People's Party (EPP) faction in the European Parliament, Manfred Weber, proposed to disconnect Russia from the SWIFT payment system and to impose strict sanctions against Russian oligarchs.
Sanctions against Nord Stream 2
Also, sanctions should apply to the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline. Weber has previously criticized the construction of the gas pipeline, because it stabilizes the system of President Vladimir Putin, and that does not correspond to European interests.
Poland was also in favor of imposing sanctions against Russia, after the Russian Federation had begun to pull in military equipment to the borders of Ukraine.
