According to the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources, 3,600 crimes against the environment committed by Russia have been reported since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Damages were estimated at UAH 2.2 trillion (more than $58.5 billion). The prime minister of Ukraine, Denys Shmyhal, reported the numbers at the United for Nature International Environmental Forum on January 31, 2024.
"Hundreds of thousands of square kilometers of Ukrainian land are potentially contaminated by mines and shells," the prime minister underscored.
Shmyhal said that the common goal of Ukraine and its partners was to make the aggressor compensate for all the damage it had done, including crimes against the environment.
"It is about assessing environmental damage, holding Russia accountable, as well as restoring and reconstructing our country. The International Working Group on the Environmental Consequences of War is operating under the umbrella of the Peace Formula. It synchronizes the world on the issue of environmental damage," the prime minister emphasized.
