Washington is going to provide Ukraine with NASAMS missile defense system — media

The United States plans to provide Ukraine with an advanced missile defense system. US President Joe Biden will soon announce sending the NASAMS system designed in Norway, which also protects the airspace around the White House. The outlet AP reports about this, citing sources in government circles and CNN.

It is reported that Washington will purchase the system and send it to Ukraine as part of the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI). Until today, most of the equipment sent to the Ukrainian defenders was given directly from the arsenal of the US Armed Forces.

When NASAMS may arrive on Ukrainian territory and how many missiles will be provided is unknown.

Context. NASAMS is a surface-to-air missile system designed to combat maneuvering aerodynamic targets at low and medium altitudes. It was developed by the Norwegian company Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace jointly with the American Raytheon.

Each mobile launcher has 6 canisters with medium and long range surface-to-air missiles. This weapon can hit targets at a distance of more than 100 miles (160 km). One battery of the system includes up to 54 missiles.
