Andrii Matyukha Foundation and Good Donations: The Thompson system introduced at “Ohmatdyt”.
In April 2025, the National Children’s Specialized Hospital "Ohmatdyt" began using the new Thompson surgical system. This equipment was purchased and delivered with the support of two charitable foundations — the Andrii Matyukha Foundation and Good Donations. One of the key participants in this initiative is Andrii Matyukha.
The system became part of the equipment for the emergency surgery department. Within two months of installation, doctors performed over 60 surgical procedures. According to specialists, the new technology improves working conditions for surgeons and enhances patient safety.
When the Thompson system is used
This type of retractor allows the surgical field to remain open without the need for assistants. This enables the doctor to focus on the core part of the procedure. According to Roman Zhezhera, head of the emergency department, the equipment has proven effective in cases of complex pathologies.
The emergency surgery department at "Okhmatdyt" operates 24/7, providing medical care to children from all regions of Ukraine. Each year, it performs more than 300 surgical procedures using this modern retractor system.

Thompson is used in the following fields:
- abdominal surgery;
- thoracic interventions;
- neurosurgery;
- oncological surgery;
- orthopedic operations.
Andrii Matyukha noted that a key advantage of the system is its versatility — it is suitable for a wide range of interventions, especially in conditions of limited time and resources.
Medical challenges and new working conditions
Among the operated patients were children with oncological diagnoses, congenital anomalies, and mine-explosive injuries. These are categories that require the utmost caution and technological precision.
Medical challenges and new working conditions.
According to doctors, the implementation of modern technology helps reduce the duration of surgeries, lowers the risk of tissue damage, decreases the physical burden on the team, and provides better visualization under challenging conditions.
Andrii Matyukha emphasizes that the result is not just technological efficiency, but the preserved health of a child, which the entire medical team strives for.
Additional initiatives beyond the operating room
In May 2025, the project initiators participated in the launch of the international installation ORIGAMI for UKRAINE. This art project is aimed at supporting doctors working under wartime conditions. It is part of a broader initiative that goes beyond technical assistance to medical institutions.
Additionally, 1 million UAH was allocated to support the families of those killed in the missile strike on Kryvyi Rih, which occurred on April 4, 2025.
Systematic support as a field of activity
The transfer of the Thompson system to "Ohmatdyt" is just one action within a long-term approach to supporting the medical sector. Its purchase was the result of a partnership among several organizations working with medical institutions across the country.
Doctors note that such initiatives enable hospitals not only to respond quickly to complex challenges but also to develop long-term solutions for treating complicated cases.
Andrii Matyukha believes that equipping hospitals with technological tools must be a regular process, not a one-time action. This is what allows the consistent quality of care to be maintained regardless of the circumstances.
