Germany has provided the second IRIS-T SLM air defense system to Ukraine out of the four it pledged to deliver.
This was reported by SPIEGEL.
The air defense system came equipped with 16 guided missiles.
The first ІRIS-Т system was delivered to Ukraine last October. Egypt, which ordered several systems from Diehl Defence, ceded the launchers to Ukraine.
The IRIS-T anti-aircraft system proved to be very effective last winter near Kyiv. It made a significant contribution to the protection of civil infrastructure from missile and drone attacks. The strikes on power supply facilities were the core of the Russian attacks intended to make cities uninhabitable.
The Kyiv mayor, Vitalii Klitschko, said that the German-made IRIS-T air defense system had saved thousands of lives during air strikes on the Ukrainian capital.
"Our military is delighted by the IRIS-T. Each shot is a hit, no misses," said Klitschko in March 2023.
The other two ІRIS-Т systems promised by Germany are being manufactured.
The IRIS-T SLM anti-aircraft system consists of three vehicles: the launcher unit, mounted on a military truck with containers for eight missiles, the radar, and the command post vehicle.
Its anti-aircraft missiles can intercept targets at an altitude of up to 20 km and a range of up to 40 km.
