Today, on February 24 at 4 am, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the start of a military operation against Ukraine. The reason was the appeal of the leaders of the so-called LDNR Denis Pushilin and Leonid Pasechnik, in which they requested him to protect them from "military aggression" from the Ukrainian state.
"Circumstances require us to take decisive and immediate action. The people's republics of Donbas appealed to Russia with a request for help. In this regard, in accordance with Article 51, Part 7 of the UN Charter, upon the approval of the Federation Council and in pursuance of the treaties of friendship and mutual assistance with the DPR and LPR ratified by the Federal Assembly, I have decided to execute a special military operation. Its goal is to protect people who have been subjected to abuse and genocide by the Kyiv regime for eight years. And for this we will strive for the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine. As well as bringing to justice those who committed numerous bloody crimes against civilians, including citizens of the Russian Federation," RBC quoted Putin as saying.
Putin stressed that he did not intend to occupy Ukrainian cities. He added that the responsibility for "possible bloodshed" would weigh entirely "upon the conscience of the Ukrainian regime."
In a video address to the people, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the imposition of martial law in Ukraine.
"In the morning, Putin announced the execution of a special military operation in Donbas. Russia has attacked our military infrastructure and our border guards. Explosions were heard in many cities of Ukraine. We are imposing martial law throughout Ukraine."
