The United States will not allow the already completed but not yet certified Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline to be launched if Moscow resorts to a new invasion of Ukraine.
"I want to be clear with you. If Russia invades Ukraine one way or another, there will be no progress on Nord Stream 2," U.S. Under Secretary of State Victoria Nuland stated during a briefing.
She added that the United States continued "strong and clear negotiations" on this matter with its allies, in particular with Germany. On January 27, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock stated that the toolbox of sanctions against Russia, if it attacked Ukraine again, would include measures against the gas pipeline.
Nuland also reported that Washington had asked Beijing to influence Moscow. According to her, an attack on Ukraine would have "a significant impact on the global economy, energy in particular, which "is not going to be good for China."
Context. The standoff between Russia and Ukraine and its implications for the flows of Russian energy to Europe and other countries have increased volatility in global energy markets, pushing oil prices up to $90 a barrel and forcing the US to look for alternative sources of gas for Europe.
