Yevhen Metzger, the Head of the Board of the state-owned Ukreximbank, who became a defendant in the case over the attack on the journalists of the TV program Schemes, wrote a letter of voluntary resignation. The Supervisory Board of the financial institution supported his decision. Serhiy Yermakov will temporarily perform Metzger’s duties.
The Head of Ukreximbank assessed the situation that had taken place and decided that "the only logical step" would be resignation.
Metzger noted that "when concluding agreements with the bank's clients, our employees have always adhered to the law, rules and procedures of banking activities."
The new Рead of Ukreximbank will be elected no later than April 12, 2022 by competition.
Context. As part of the preparation of the investigation into Ukreximbank, the Schemes team met with the Head of the bank, Yevgeny Metzger, on October 4 to record an interview. During the conversation, journalists asked a question about a multimillion dollar loan, which angered the Head of the financial institution. He ordered the guards to take all the equipment from the TV program workers and delete the recordings. Subsequently, the journalists managed to recover all the recordings.
The journalists called the police and filed a report. The police launched criminal proceedings in respect of obstructing the work of journalists.
Later, Metzger decided to withdraw from his duties. But only for the period of the investigation. On October 8, he was handed a notice of suspicion of obstructing the journalists’ professional activities, as well as illegal detention of people.
On October 11, Metzger was chosen as a measure of restraint in the form of the night house arrest from 21:00 to 06:00.
