Russia in the UN Security Council: Does the aggressor have the right to membership? Photo: the UN
On Monday, December 26, Ukraine officially raised the issue of the possibility of excluding Russia from the UN Security Council, a body responsible for maintaining global peace and security. Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba announced this on the air of the national telethon.
"Our question is very simple: Does Russia have the right to remain a permanent member of the UN Security Council and the UN at all? We have a convincing and well-founded answer: No and no," the minister emphasized.
What steps will Ukraine take to unseat Russia from the UN Security Council?
Earlier this month, the Foreign Ministry announced the preparation of specific measures Ukraine would take to force Russia out of its seat in the UN Security Council.
"Ukraine is now preparing to take official steps that will prove Russia’s presence in the UN Security Council to be illegitimate and launch a political process aimed at removing it from this seat," Kuleba emphasized.
The foreign minister also noted that Russia obtained its membership in one of the key bodies of the UN 31 years ago with "no legal grounds" and through a "fraudulent scheme."
Congress members demand to expel Russia from the UN Security Council. The White House estimated the chances
On December 14, 2022, Congressmen Joe Wilson and Steve Cohen introduced a resolution to remove Russia from the United Nations Security Council and other organizations and specialized agencies of the UN. In the document, they stressed that the aggressor’s presence on the Security Council "violates the purposes and principles of the United Nations."
The White House stated that there was no opportunity to exclude Russia so far, but if there were one, the United States "would immediately begin to do so."
