There’s a consensus among NATO members on Ukraine’s accession to the organization. Olha Stefanishyna, Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration, stated this on December 1 at the Kyiv Security Forum.
"We have made progress with respect to accession to NATO. At the last meeting of NATO ministers of foreign affairs in Bucharest, all 30 NATO member states agreed that Ukraine has to be a member of the Alliance," she emphasized.
There’s no alternative to the security alliance. Ukraine’s application for accession to the Alliance will be formally considered at the Vilnius NATO summit in July 2023. This step will open the perspective to redefining leadership in NATO. At the same time, some members of the Alliance, primarily Hungary, are still blocking direct meetings between NATO and Ukraine at the level of heads of state and ministers.
Olha Stefanishyna also confirmed that Ukraine intends to continue the negotiations on accession to the EU in January 2023. The government is determined to meet all seven political criteria for accession by the New Year.
"We are mutually compatible on such a level that we can become a member of the EU almost automatically. We are prepared from a technical standpoint, but we see that leaders of some countries are blocking this process," she added.
This week, foreign ministers of NATO member states asserted that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization was steadfast in its commitment to Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. NATO will assist Ukraine on its path of post-war reconstruction and reforms so that Ukraine can secure its free and democratic future.
