The first case of monkeypox was identified in Ukraine. This was reported by the Ministry of Health.
The disease was confirmed by laboratory testing. The patient has been hospitalized and is staying in the healthcare facility.
"The patient was hospitalized at a healthcare facility for inpatient treatment, his disease has a mild course," the ministry noted.
It was also reported that the disease was diagnosed by way of a PCR test performed by a regional center for disease control and prevention of the MoH of Ukraine.
"The epidemiological investigation of the case is ongoing," the report says.
The monkeypox patient said that he had no contact with infected people.
"Nevertheless, the apparent symptoms of the disease and the preliminary results of studying the epidemiological history suggest that the patient was infected in one of the country’s big cities," the MoH pointed out.
The patient’s manifestations of the disease include fever and a skin rash.
The MoH emphasized that they decided not to disclose the region where monkeypox was identified for the sake of the patient’s comfort.
What is monkeypox and what are the symptoms?
Monkeypox is a rare viral disease. The infectious agent is genetically close to the virus that causes smallpox. The disease is more common in the Central and Eastern African regions.
Monkeypox symptoms:
- fever;
- headache;
- muscle aches;
- back pain;
- swelling of the lymph nodes;
- chills;
- exhaustion.
