The Cabinet of Ministers proposes to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine to reduce the cost of duty-free luggage that persons can carry with them. The cost of duty-free luggage will be reduced from 1,000 to 430 euros for seaports, and for border land crossing points—from 500 to 300 euros.

The government supported the corresponding bill at a meeting on June 9.

What will change in the rules for transporting luggage and goods to the territory of Ukraine:

  • the period for importing goods into Ukraine without duties, imposed in connection with resettlement to the country for permanent residence, increases from six months to one year;
  • import of fixed assets of companies that move their activities to Ukraine and create a new enterprise in it is completely exempt from duties;
  • import of scientific equipment and objects of scientific research activity, that is not related to entrepreneurship, is also exempted from duties.

Context. In January 2021, low-cost airline Wizz Air changed the cost of checked luggage transportation, as well as the amount of other mandatory and additional charges.

Ukrzaliznytsia in the same month also announced changes in the rules of luggage transportation. The amendments provide for strict control over observing luggage allowance by passengers, since the company is incurring losses because of unpaid luggage.
