During the year 2022, 67 journalists were killed globally. Among them, 12 died in Ukraine while covering Russian aggression against Ukraine. This data was published by the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ).

Ukraine has set a grievous record for the number of killed journalists: the war has taken more lives of media workers than terror by drug mafia in Mexico (11 fatalities) or armed conflict in Haiti (6).

More than 375 journalists are also held in prison. Among them are 15 repressed Crimean journalists who are Ukrainian citizens. According to the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine, this includes two professional journalists, one civic activist, and 12 civil journalists. Political repression against the media in 2022 has pervaded China, Belarus, Egypt, Hong Kong, Iran, Myanmar, Turkey, and Russia.
