It may cost $38 billion to clear farmlands of mines

The primary challenges are currently the reclamation of land and mine clearing. According to satellite data, 835,000 hectares (nearly 3,223 square miles) of land have been damaged. Roman Neyter, researcher at the Center for Food and Land Use Research of the Kyiv School of Economics, said this at the Grain Ukraine-2023 conference.

Experts cannot estimate the time required to clear mines from agricultural lands. According to them, time estimation depends on the number of deminers and the level of technical means involved.

Quote"Hopefully, this will take us years and not decades," Roman Neyter noted.

According to him, farmlands will be brought back to their pre-war condition in three stages:

  • non-technical surveying;
  • technical surveying;
  • mine clearance.

The total costs may amount to $18.3 to $38 billion.
