Energoatom and Holtec International to build a plant for manufacturing containers in Ukraine

At a joint meeting, the President of Energoatom, Petro Kotin, and the Vice President of the U.S. company Holtec International, Riaz Awan, agreed to build a plant for manufacturing spent nuclear fuel storage containers in Ukraine.

Energoatom announced this on social media.

The new plant will produce containers to store spent nuclear fuel from domestic nuclear power plants. They will be disposed of at the Centralized Spent Fuel Storage Facility (CSFSF), located in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone.

Quote"Our Company is satisfied with the implementation of the project, and it is a great honor for us to cooperate with Ukraine and Energoatom. Even in conditions of armed aggression, we can say with confidence: the technology used in the Centralized Spent Fuel Storage Facility is reliable, safe, and competitive," Holtec Vice President Riaz Awan underscored.

The parties also discussed the transfer of technology to Ukraine and the production of spent nuclear fuel containers, currently manufactured in the United States, at the CSFSF site.

Petro Kotin reported that Minister of Energy of Ukraine Herman Halushchenko met with President and CEO of Holtec International Kris Singh to discuss these issues.

Quote"With such professional partners as Holtec International, the revival of Ukrainian nuclear energy is not just our goal but a reality. We are grateful to our partners for their belief in the importance of nuclear energy for the sustainable future and success of Ukraine," said Herman Halushchenko, the minister of energy.

Earlier, we reported that Energoatom had resumed work to build a nuclear waste recycling facility at the Khmelnytskyi NPP. The cost of the work will amount to UAH 168.3 million (nearly $4.7 million).
