The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has declared admissible the case of Ukraine against Russia regarding Crimea. Moreover, the court has already moved on to consider it.
In the case, Ukraine is asking to recognize Russia's violation of a number of articles, the Minister of Justice Denys Malyuska wrote on his Facebook page.
According to the Minister, the case has several important aspects:
- legal. Step by step Ukraine proves in court the facts of aggression and criminal behavior on the part of the Russian Federation;
- communication. Ukraine and the Council of Europe give a powerful message that Crimea remains a priority matter and all those involved will not shirk responsibility;
- countering hybrid war. Such court decisions destroy the myth that Russia annexed Crimea peacefully.
In addition, the ECHR has confirmed that the Russian Federation had effective control over Crimea since February 2014, and not since the so-called "referendum".
In particular, the case concerns the persecution of the Crimea annexation opponents and repression.
Context. Ukraine filed two complaints of Russian aggression in 2014 and 2015. Subsequently, in 2018, these two cases were merged into one.
