Israel will consider giving Ukraine air defense systems, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
He stressed that Benjamin Netanyahu, the leader of the Likud party, promised to reconsider the issue of providing air defense to Ukraine.
The Ukrainian head of state said that Ukraine managed to establish a discussion with Netanyahu about the air defense issue, which is a priority for Kyiv.
"We’ve communicated all the details related to air defense. This is a No. 1 priority. He assured me that he would deal with this issue as soon as possible or think of ways he could help and come back with an answer," Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted.
He also emphasized that Ukraine doesn’t ask Israel to give it weapons to attack the enemy. Instead, Kyiv requests weapons that can help it defend itself.
Context. Ukraine has been saying that it wants to buy the Israeli-made Iron Dome air defense system for quite some time. However, Kyiv’s request was denied. Israel also refused to give Ukraine any other weapons, allegedly out of fear that they may "fall into the wrong hands".
However, the Israeli government later decided to give Ukraine non-lethal aid.
