President of Energoatom Petro Kotin and President and CEO of Westinghouse Electric Company Patrick Fragman signed an agreement on the purchase of equipment for Unit 5 at the Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant. The unit will be built using American AP1000 technology.

Such reactors are new not only to Ukraine but also to Europe.

Quote"This is one of the most advanced technologies in nuclear energy, which makes it possible to maintain the safety systems of nuclear power plants even in case of blackouts and the absence of diesel generators or other power systems," Minister of Energy of Ukraine German Galushchenko said, adding that nuclear energy has been, is, and will be the key generation in Ukraine.

The actual capacity of the AP1000 units stands at 1,100 MW, while the most powerful nuclear units in Ukraine currently have a capacity of 1,000 MW.

The construction of the relevant facilities will begin immediately after the Verkhovna Rada adopts the necessary law, said Kotin.

Quote"Today, five AP1000 units are in operation around the world, in particular in the United States and China, and five more are almost ready to be commissioned. Poland and Bulgaria are interested in the construction of such reactors, as well as a number of other countries," the Westinghouse President stressed.

Context. On November 22, 2021, Energoatom and Westinghouse signed two cooperation agreements to implement a pilot project for the construction of AP1000 power units at the Khmelnytskyi NPP. On January 20, 2023, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the proposals of the Ministry of Energy to develop a feasibility study for the construction of a nuclear facility using the AP1000 technology.

Nine power units are planned to be built in Ukraine using the АР1000 technology. The first two will be constructed at the site of the Khmelnytskyi NPP.
