Ukraine may refuse to rebuild the Kakhovka HPP, but it can only be possible after a number of issues related to the Kakhovka reservoir are settled. Ihor Syrota, Director General of Ukrhydroenergo, said this in an interview with Forbes.
According to him, the importance of the HPP for the energy system is only the fifth most important issue on the agenda. The following challenges related to the existence of the Kakhovke reservoir are important:
- covering the water deficit in the Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, and Dnipropetrovsk regions, which relied on the Kakhovsky reservoir for the supply of water;
- compensation for the losses of the irrigation system, which was fed from the Kakhovka reservoir, and restoration of water supply to Crimea after its deoccupation;
- water supply to the Zaporizhzhia NPP after its deoccupation;
- river navigation over the Dnieper. Currently, the depth at the site of the Kakhovka reservoir is up to 2 m, compared with 16 m in the reservoir.
"If we can solve these issues without restoring the Kakhovka HPP, then it will be possible to discuss whether it is expedient to build a hydroelectric plant. However, at the moment, the HPP is the only solution to these problems," Ihor Syrota emphasized.
