The government supported the bill that provided for expanding the requirements regarding regulations for producing and selling the food products in Ukraine.
As the explanatory note to the bill "On Amendments to Certain Laws of Ukraine on Food Products and Other Facilities of Sanitary Measures" states, its main goal is to improve domestic legislation in the field of food and feed safety and quality and its harmonization with EU legislation, as well as to oppose product falsification and to prevent unfair competition.
The document provides for:
- tighter control and increased accountability for violations in the field of food safety and quality;
- introduction of the notions "imitation food product", "adulterated food product", "vegan/vegetarian food product", etc.;
- imposition of new standards for state registration of food additives, enzymes, and flavorings;
- imposition of norms for certifying organic production.
The implementation of the bill does not require funding from the state or local budget.
Context. From time to time, high-profile scandals emerge in Ukraine caused by melamine contained in baby food, outbreaks of severe poisoning (because of bacteria or microorganisms in food), and the spread of dangerous infectious diseases. Along with this, the problem of food counterfeiting in the consumer market is urgent for our country.
