The largest faction of the Bundestag voiced a proposal to resolve the migration crisis that has been ongoing for several days on the Belarusian-Polish border. The Social Democrats suggest first letting the refugees into Poland "in a controlled manner", from where they can then be transported to a third country outside the EU. There they will wait for the decision of their asylum applications.
Nils Schmid, a foreign policy speaker of the Social Democratic Party faction, specified that an agreement could be reached with Ukraine to resolve the problem.
"In this way we can make it clear that not every refugee will automatically enter the European Union," he stressed.
The politician criticized Poland's reaction to the situation on the border with Belarus. He emphasized the reports that the Polish side was forcing illegal immigrants back to Belarus and did not even allow them to apply for asylum. Schmid stressed that Poland was obliged to comply with the norms of international law on the protection of refugees' rights.
Additionally. The EU blames the self-proclaimed President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko for the migration crisis. Also, his regime is accused of using illegal immigrants as an instrument of pressure on Western countries. The bloc countries have almost completed the preparation of a new, fifth consecutive, package of sanctions against Belarus.
The former Ambassador of Belarus to France and Poland Pavel Latushko stated that the Belarusian special services conducted exercises with some illegal immigrants from Afghanistan and Iraq, so that they could arrange provocations on the Belarusian-Polish border. According to him, these people were being prepared for "clashes on the border of Belarus and the EU with the use of weapons."
Context. The migration crisis on the Belarusian-Polish border has been ongoing since August. Warsaw accuses Minsk of specially created migration pressure as part of the hostile hybrid actions against Poland and the EU.
The situation has recently escalated critically. According to rough estimates, there are about 4,000 migrants near the Polish border from Belarus. They set up tent camps and from time to time make attempts to force a breakthrough across the border. Poland declared a state of emergency near the border and pulled in troops there to guard it.
