President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi topped the Dreamers category in POLITICO’s annual ranking of the most influential people in Europe.
The newspaper likens Zelenskyi to Winston Churchill, Martin Luther King Jr., and other prominent figures capable of "changing the course of history, not through the might of their army or the strength of their economy, but through the power of their words."
Politico notes that Zelenskyi inspired Ukrainians to fight and Western partners to provide effective financial and defense assistance.
Zelenskyi’s leadership was "so effective" that he managed to push through things that were until recently unthinkable, moving Ukraine to the front of the line for EU and NATO membership.
However, 2024 is going to be a challenging year for the Ukrainian president, Politico argues, as Ukrainians are exhausted, the world is distracted by the war in the Middle East, and EU politicians are getting skittish about the likely impact of the war.
In total, Politico chose nine people in each of the three categories: the Doers, Disrupters, and Dreamers.
On November 27, it was falsely claimed on the Internet that Politico had chosen President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi as the most influential person in Europe for the second year in a row. However, the message was refuted later.
