Pentagon announces new military assistance to Ukraine for $300 million: What weapons to be supplied

On April 1, the US Department of Defense notified Congress of additional assistance activities under the authority provided by the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI).

The assistance is estimated at up to $300 million. It will include:

  • Laser-guided rocket systems;
  • Switchblade Tactical Unmanned Aerial Systems (this is the so-called "suicide" drone);
  • Puma Unmanned Aerial Systems;
  • Counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems;
  • Armored High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles ((HMMWV, another name is Humvee);
  • Small-to-large caliber nonstandard ammunition;
  • Night vision devices, thermal imagery systems, and optics;
  • Tactical secure communications systems;
  • Non-standard machine guns;
  • Commercial satellite imagery services;
  • Medical supplies, field equipment, and spare parts.

Switchblade is a tactical loitering munition designed for use in Afghanistan. It carries a warhead and is designed, depending on the modification, to attack manpower, unprotected military hardware, and armored targets. It is small enough so that the operator can carry it in a backpack. It is launched from various land, sea and air platforms. Has two versions: Switchblade 300 and Switchblade 600. The warhead of the second version is the same as on the Javelin ATGM.

RQ-20 Puma (Pointer Upgraded Mission Ability) is a light unmanned aerial vehicle with an electric motor. Can be launched right from the hand. It is able to fly under the operator’s control or navigate independently using GPS navigation.

It is equipped with various optical and thermal cameras. Flight duration 2 or 3.5 hours (depending on modification). The cost is $250,000.
