Ukraine will not extend the contract for the transit of Russian gas to the EU after 2024
Ukraine doesn’t plan to extend the contract for the transit of Russian natural gas to Europe after 2024. The press service of the Cabinet of Ministers issued the statement, according to Interfax-Ukraine.
"The position of the Ukrainian side is unambiguous: the transit contract expires at the end of the year. We are not going to talk to the Russians and extend the contract," the press service reported.
According to the press service of the Cabinet of Ministers, Ukraine can make a deal with a EU member state on the use of its gas distribution network.
According to the Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine LLC, the transit of Russian natural gas through Ukraine’s gas transmission system (GTS) went down by 28.4%, or 5.8 billion cubic meters, in 2023 as compared to 2022 and totaled 14.6 billion cubic meters.
The transit deal between Ukraine’s Naftogaz and Russia’s Gazprom, as well as the transit agreement between Naftogaz and the GTS Operator and the inter-operator agreement between the GTS Operator and Gazprom, were signed on December 30, 2019, to be effective from 2021 to 2024. The contracted volume to be transported was 40 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year.
