As of September 19, 2023, the total volume of natural gas in Ukraine’s underground storage facilities reached 14.7 billion cubic meters. Therefore, the plan of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine to reach the forecast balance of natural gas in underground storage facilities necessary for the heating season was fulfilled ahead of schedule. Ukraine’s Minister of Energy Herman Halushchenko reported this on Telegram.
"The entire energy and oil and gas industry is now actively preparing for the new heating season, which will take place under Russian attacks. The accumulation of gas in our storage facilities ahead of schedule is an important contribution to ensuring the country's energy security," he said.
Earlier, the USAID Energy Security Project published a review of stress-test scenarios initiated by the Ministry of Energy and modeled by an international expert team. According to it, the Ukrainian gas transit system and underground storage facilities are prepared to work successfully given the wartime challenges, and in the event the transit of Russian gas is stopped.
