The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine will finance the construction of one corvette for the Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the amount of 3.8 billion UAH (about $136 million) in 2021.
The funds will be used to finance the construction of an "Ada"-type corvette that was developed in Turkey and is to be built for the needs of the Ukrainian Navy, the Ukrainian Military Portal reports.
"In 2022, we will receive the first batch of Mark VI boats. In a few months, the corvette will be laid down. And for this all we need trained personnel," said the Commander of the National Fleet, Counter-Admiral Oleksiy Neizhpapa.
The dockyard where the corvette will be laid down was not specified by Neizhpapa.
Context. In December 2020, Ukraine entered into direct agreements with Turkish companies on technology transfer and production of corvettes and attack UAVs. For the implementation of the corvette program, the State Defense Concern of Turkey has chosen the Mykolaiv shipyard "Ocean".
A memorandum was signed between the Ukrainian shipyard and the Turkish concern on the construction of a series of corvette-class ships for the Ukrainian Navy. The memorandum provides for the conclusion of separate contracts between the parties within clearly agreed terms and specific steps of cooperation in the ship construction.
