Shmyhal agrees to lift sanctions against Yanukovych and his associates

Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal stated that in cases where the sanctions had played their role, and the funds and values had been returned, their time frame can be completed. This was his answer to the question about the possible lifting of sanctions from the son of former President Viktor Yanukovych Oleksandr and other associates of the state ex-head.

He stated this at a press conference regarding the results of the EU-Ukraine Association Council meeting, reports the Interfax-Ukraine agency.

"Regarding the sanctions policy, it should be noted that Europe remains on firm unbreakable positions supporting Ukraine, in particular, in the sanctions policy. The sanctions continue their time frame. As for specific individuals, where the sanctions played their role against these individuals, the funds or valuables that had been stolen were returned, of course, there the sanctions can complete their time frame."

He also added that the lifting of sanctions is a separate procedure that is subject to separate consideration. Both Ukraine and the EU are conducting a dialogue on this at the professional and legislative levels. Shmyhal also said that the European Union’s introduction of a new global sanctions regime for violation of human rights will expand the EU sanctions lists.

Context. Earlier, the media reported that EU diplomats are considering lifting sanctions on several Ukrainians who may have been involved in the misuse of public funds. We are talking about Yanukovych, his son, and other associates.
