On August 9, the Russian army begins the large-scale exercises on the territory of the country, as well as in the occupied Crimea, Abkhazia, and South Ossetia.
As the agency "Interfax-Ukraine" reports, referring to the press service of the Southern Military District (Air Defense), battalion tactical exercises of all arms of the Russian air defense forces will be held with the involvement of aircraft and ships of the Black Sea Fleet and the Caspian Flotilla. They will be held until September 15th.
The exercises will be held at 20 combined-arms training grounds in the Astrakhan and Rostov regions, in the Stavropol and Kuban regions, in Adygea, Dagestan, North Ossetia, Chechnya, in the annexed Crimea, Abkhazia, South Ossetia (located on the territory of Georgia), and at Russian military bases in Armenia.
The report says that within the framework of the exercises of motorized rifle, tank, and artillery units, specialists of all branches of the armed forces will perform combat training tasks. Moreover, the forces of army, military transport, assault, and operational-tactical aviation will be involved. Ships and more than 80 aircraft and helicopters will take part in the exercises every day. The units of radiation, chemical, and biological protection, engineering troops, electronic warfare, reconnaissance, logistical, and medical support and the like will also be involved.
Context. In April 2021, tensions escalated in the east of Ukraine and in Crimea. At the end of the month, Minister of Defence of Russian Federation Sergei Shoigu announced the end of "verification activities" in the Southern and Western Military Districts of the country on the border with Ukraine.
