The Grain Deal on the exports of Ukrainian grain was extended for 60 days instead of the 120 days demanded by Ukraine. According to Reuters, Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko said this on Tuesday, March 14, 2023.
Earlier in Geneva, the Russian representative Sergei Vershinin agreed only to a half of the previous extension of the deal from November 2022.
"The UN will do everything possible to preserve the integrity of the Black Sea Grain Initiative and ensure its continuity," the UN responded.
Earlier, Oleksandr Kubrakov, Vice Prime Minister for the Restoration of Ukraine, pointed out that the Black Sea Grain Initiative agreement involved at least 120 days of extension, so Russia’s position to extend the deal only for 60 days was contrary to the document signed by Turkey and the UN.
"We’re waiting for the official position of the UN and Turkey as the guarantors of the initiative," Kubrakov tweeted.
Context. At the Geneva negotiations, the Russians insisted that the prolongation of the deal should be conditional on the lifting of sanctions and restrictions imposed on Russia’s imports.
