Mixing vaccines: Ukraine is for, WHO is against

The Ukrainian Ministry of Health intends to officially authorize the combination of various types of vaccines against coronavirus, Chief Sanitary Doctor Ihor Kuzin stated.

The National Immunization Technical Advisory Group has now recommended that mixing vaccines be allowed, but subject to certain conditions. It is the administration of the second dose of Comirnaty / Pfizer-BioNTech after the first dose of Moderna mRNA vaccine. But it is suggested to use this in cases where it is not possible to complete the vaccination with the same drug. In addition, the doctor may decide to give a second dose of Comirnaty if the person has had a severe allergic reaction to the first dose of the AstraZeneca vector vaccine.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) notes that there is not yet enough data on mixing vaccines. Moreover, these actions can even be dangerous. The Page has compiled information on whether there is a difference between different manufacturers of the same vaccine and whether vaccines from different manufacturers can be used for inoculation.

Context. A number of institutes around the world have said that, according to their research, mixing vaccines is completely safe and can increase protection against coronavirus. In addition, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) has stated that mixing coronavirus vaccines is safe and effective.
