Missile attacks on Ukraine on March 9, 2023: latest updates

Starting on 1 a.m., March 9, 2023, air raid alarm went off all over the country. The Page has been updating news on massive missile attacks on Ukraine.

Emergency power outages have been introduced in Kyiv and the Kyiv, Odessa, Mykolaiv, and Dnipropetrovsk regions due to the massive missile attacks. DTEK ascertains that this is a necessary preventative measure to avoid significant damage to the energy infrastructure.

Air defense systems were reported to be working since 2:00 a.m. in the Kyrovohrad, Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Odesa, Mykolaiv, Lviv, and Ivano-Frankivsk regions.

Explosions were heard in the cities of Odesa, Dnipro, Zhytomyr, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, Khmelnytskyi, as well as in the Vinnytsia region.

Kharkiv is targeted by a massive missile barrage.

4:15 a.m. — the Odesa regional military administration reported that missiles had hit an energy infrastructure facility in the region. Residential buildings were damaged. No casualties were reported.

4:20 a.m. — the Kharkiv mayor, Ihor Terekhov, warned about power outages in a number of districts as the enemy was targeting energy infrastructure.

4:59 a.m. — repeated explosions were heard in Dnipro. Explosions were reported in Lutsk and the Rivne region. Air defense systems were working in the Lviv and Kyrovohrad regions.

5:50 a.m. — an explosion was heard in Kyiv. In half an hour, Vitalii Klitschko, the Kyiv mayor, confirmed that there were explosions in the Holosiivskyi district of the city. All emergency services were dispatched.

6:57 a.m. — The missile attack prompted energy suppliers to introduce emergency outages in the capital. Around 15% of consumers were cut off from electricity supply in Kyiv, says Klitschko.

As of 7:12 a.m., air raid alert was announced in all central, eastern, and southern regions of Ukraine.

7:14 a.m. — another explosion in the capital, the Sviatoshynskyi district. All emergency services were dispatched. Cars near a residential house were burning, said Klitschko.

7:22 a.m. — according to Energoatom, the Zaporizhzhia NPP was completely cut off power supply due to Russian attacks. At 3:53 a.m., a Russian missile attack cut the last supply line connecting the occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant with the Ukrainian energy system.

7:36 a.m. — the mayor of Zhytomyr reported that a number of residential buildings had been cut off power and water supply. The situation is difficult. No casualties were reported.

7:45 a.m. — an infrastructure facility was hit in the Hilisiivskyi district, the Kyiv city military administration reports.

8:00 a.m. — Vitalii Klitschko reported that two injured people were hospitalized in the Sviatoshynskyi district of the capital. By far, three people sought medical help.

After the missile attack, 40% of people in Kyiv were cut off from central heating due to emergency power outages. Water supply is intact.

8:05 a.m. — an infrastructure facility in Kyiv was hit by a Kinzhal hypersonic aero-ballistic air-to-surface missile, says the head of the Kyiv city military administration, Serhii Popko. All other missile types were intercepted by air defense systems.

"Air raid alert had been active for nearly seven hours in Kyiv. Russian fascist used virtually all types of aerial weapons they have, starting from Shahed drones and through almost all the types of cruise missiles. Our air defense systems repelled all the attacks by cruise missiles and UAVs on the capital. Unfortunately, a Kinzhal hypersonic aero-ballistic air-to-surface missile (preliminary information) hit an infrastructure facility. Missile fragments damaged cars," said Serhii Popko.

8:07 a.m. — Oleksandr Vilkul, head of the Kryvyi Rih district military administration: Two energy infrastructure facilities were attacked in the Kryvyi Rih district, Dnipropetrovsk region. The aftermath is pending confirmation. No casualties were reported.

In the Nikopol district, Dnipropetrovsk region, the enemy shelled the city of Nikopol and the Chervonohryhorivka municipality using Grad MLRS and cannon artillery. In the Chervonohryhorivka municipality, a man (b. 1989) was killed and a woman (b. 1995) and a man (b. 2004) were injured. In Nikopol, an energy infrastructure facility was set on fire. The city of Kryvyi Rih wasn’t attacked.

8:10 a.m. — Suspilne published footage of firefighters putting out a fire caused by missile fragments that fell on cars.

8:12 a.m. — Maksym Marchenko, head of the Odesa regional military administration: A missile attack damaged several power supply lines and a line support in the region. Scheduled power outages have been implemented. Air defense forces shot down six missiles and one drone over the Odesa region.

8:12 a.m. — Maksym Kozytskyi, head of the Lviv regional military administration: In the Zolochiv district, Lviv region, a missile fell in a residential area. A fire broke out, which was promptly put out. Four people were reported to had been killed, including two men and two women. They were in their homes when the missile fell. The rubble is still being cleared. There may be people under it. The fire destroyed three residential buildings, three cars, a garage, and several outbuildings.

8:20 a.m. Results of the attacks on Ukraine.

Zhytomyr region. The invaders attacked with kamikaze drones. An energy infrastructure facility was damaged. Nearly 150,000 people have been cut off from power supply. Power engineers managed to restore power supply to the region’s critical infrastructure facilities.

Dnipropetrovsk region. The enemy attacked with drones and missiles. Energy infrastructure and industrial enterprises were damaged in the Dnipro, Pavlohrad, Kryvyi Rih, and Nikopol districts. The damage is serious. All the respective services are working on site.

Mykolaiv region. According to the South Air Force Command, air defense forces intercepted nine missiles of different types in the region on March 9 night.

8:25 a.m. Andrii Raikovych, head of the Kyrovohrad regional military administration: Russia attacked critical infrastructure with missiles and drones. In the Kropyvnytskyi district, an energy facility was hit. All the respective services are working on site. No casualties were reported

8:40 a.m. U.K. Ambassador to Ukraine Melinda Simmons commented on Russia’s massive attack on Ukrainian infrastructure.

Quote"Friends and colleagues in #Kyiv woke up this morning to explosions and shaking windows. This is nowhere near over, and Ukraine continues to have no choice but to push Russia back to its borders," the ambassador tweeted.

DTEK reports that three DTEK Energo thermal power plants were damaged by the attacks. No casualties have been reported so far. Plant equipment was heavily damaged. After the attack was over, power engineers started mitigating the results promptly. Since last September, DTEK’s thermal power plants have been attacked 29 times. As a result, 3 workers were killed and 28 were injured.

9:10 a.m. DTEK canceled emergency power outages in Kyiv. However, due to the overload of one line, emergency power outages continue in parts of the Holosiivskyi, Solomianskyi, and Sviatoshynskyi districts.

Kyiv and Dnipropetrovsk regions: emergency power outages have been canceled.

Odessa region: the massive Russian missile attack damaged energy infrastructure facilities in the region. This caused power outages in a part of the region at night.

Repair crews of Ukrenergo and DTEK are already working to mitigate the results of the attacks.

9:20 a.m. Zolochiv district, Lviv region: a fifth casualty was reported as a man’s body was found under the rubble.

9:45 a.m. Zhytomyr. Electricity was supplied to the pumping stations of Zhytomyrvodokanal municipal water supplier, but the booster pumping stations are still de-energized, says Zhytomyr City Council. The company recommends those who currently have tap water to store a daily supply of water.

9:55 Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the Ukrainians:
