The Armed Forces of Ukraine will receive tens of Leopard 1А5 tanks from Germany and Denmark in July.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said this in an interview with Rzeczpospolita.
"Tens of Leopard 1A5 battle tanks provided by Germany and Denmark will arrive in Ukraine in the coming weeks. In addition, we have just prepared a new €2.7 assistance package in May, which includes additional urgently needed weapons, such as IRIS-T SLM air defense systems," the defense minister said.
German instructors are also helping train Ukrainian soldiers, Pistorius added.
What is known about Leopard 1A5
Leopard 1A5 has a 105-mm gun and a MG3 7.62-mm coaxial machine gun. It had been Germany’s main battle tank until the 1980s.
The Leopard 1A5 version is the last serial model. It is equipped with the Krupp-Atlas Elektronik EMES 18 fire control system and the Carl Zeiss thermal imager, which was developed from the system used on the advanced Leopard 2.
Earlier, it was reported that Rheinmetall would deliver 14 Leopard 2A4 battle tanks to Ukraine on behalf of the Dutch government.
