Ukrnafta has started 3D seismic surveys in Western Ukraine. This is the first instance of 3D seismic surveys applying a wireless data logging system in Ukraine, as well as the first 3D seismic surveys for Ukrnafta in the region. In addition, according to the company’s press service, Ukrnafta has launched such a project for the first time in the last 10 years.

Quote"The method is as follows: powerful vibrator machines operate on the surface, creating seismic waves moving underground. The waves are reflected from different rocks with the relevant parameters. Data is collected on the surface using an extensive network of special seismic sensors, or geophones. Sensors can be connected to wires, which is a more common but not the most advanced method. It is much more efficient to use state-of-the-art wireless systems, especially in difficult surface conditions, such as in mountainous areas," the message says.

Ukrnafta’s specialists will use three seismic vibrators, explosive sources, and 20,000 receiver sensors to perform their work on an area of 80 square kilometers. A total of more than a hundred employees will be involved.

Quote"The data obtained, like an ultrasound image used in healthcare, will make it possible to assess the internal structure of promising horizons and understand where and to what depth new wells need to be drilled," says Serhii Koretskyi, CEO of Ukrnafta.

The company has another similar survey in Eastern Ukraine scheduled for 2023. Next year, Ukrnafta plans to use wireless data logging systems and is going to explore about 1,000 square kilometers in the western and eastern regions of Ukraine.
