Demining of Ukraine: more than 170,000 hectares of land are safe again

The Ministry of Economy reported the current situation with respect to mine clearance in Ukraine. More than 225,00 hectares (869 square miles) of agricultural land on the priority list have been surveyed since the beginning of the year. Of them, more than 170,000 hectares (656 square miles) can already be cultivated.

During the last week alone, more than 5,000 hectares (19 square miles) of such land have been surveyed in three provinces. This includes 4,200 hectares (16 square miles) in the Kherson region, while the rest is located in the Mykolaiv and Kharkiv regions.

According to the Ministry of Economy, humanitarian demining organizations have already surveyed more than 47% of farming land on the priority list, including:

  • More than 28% in the Kharkiv region;
  • More than 48% in the Kherson region;
  • More than 79% in the Mykolaiv region.

In total, more than 470,000 hectares (1,815 square miles) have to be surveyed, cleared, and demined in four years.
