Ukraine has agreed on the supply of liquefied natural gas from Turkey

Ukraine and the Republic of Turkey have agreed on cooperation in the energy sector, including the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG).

Deputy Minister of Energy for European Integration Yaroslav Demchenkov spoke about this during the fifth meeting of the Ukrainian-Turkish working group on energy issues.

"At the moment we are not an active player of the LNG market, but the geopolitical situation and the decrease in transit volumes force us to look for new areas of trade and cooperation to ensure the workload of our own gas transportation system. That is why cooperation with the Republic of Turkey in terms of LNG supplies is a priority for us," Demchenkov stressed.

According to him, the parties agreed to promote cooperation between energy companies regarding the supply of natural gas to Ukraine, including the development of the LNG terminals infrastructure.

The countries also agreed to cooperate on the transportation of natural gas through the Trans-Balkan pipeline in both directions between Ukraine and Turkey.

Reference. Azerbaijan may become one of the new gas sources to Ukraine. To date, natural gas transportation to Ukraine from Azerbaijan is possible through the territory of Turkey and onwards through the Trans-Balkan pipeline.

Back in August 2020, Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine, at the request of its clients, carried out the reverse transportation of gas through the Trans-Balkan gas corridor from Greece through the GTS of Bulgaria and Romania to Ukraine. This demonstrated the technical ability of the Trans-Balkan route.
