Fighting is underway on the Zaporizhzhia axis, says Maliar

Ukraine’s Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar has reported on Telegram that the village of Velyka Novosilka and areas near Orikhiv in the Zaporizhzhia region are contested.

According to ABC News, this is a sign of the counteroffensive of Ukrainian forces.

Western mass media suggest that Ukrainian defenders could strive to sever the so-called land bridge between mainland Russia and the occupied Crimea, cutting off Russia’s supply lines. Media outlets expect Ukrainian forces to also attempt to liberate Melitopol as well as Enerhodar, the city where the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is located.

Oleksandr Tarnavsky, commander of the Tavria Operational Strategic Force, also reported that around three Russian companies had been neutralized:

Quote"In particular, this includes 12 tanks, 5 infantry fighting vehicles, 3 armored vehicles, 2 MT-LBs, an armored personnel carrier, a 2S19 Msta-S howitzer, an Akatsiya 2S3 self-propelled howitzer, a Gvozdika 2S1 self-propelled howitzer, a Pole-3 electronic warfare system, a Zoopark radar station, a BUK-M2 surface-to-air missile system, a Supercam drone, an Orlan-10 drone, a Zala drone, two BM-21 Grad multiple-launch rocket systems, a Strela-10 surface-to-air missile system, and a Msta-S self-propelled howitzer. Five enemy ammunition depots were also destroyed," he wrote.

As of June 8, 2023, the Ukrainian military neutralized a total of 730 Russian invaders, 18 tanks, 16 armored personnel vehicles, and 28 artillery systems.
