US President Joe Biden waived new US sanctions on the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline construction. The reason was that the project is almost finished, and new sanctions will damage relations with Europe.
This was stated by Biden himself, Bloomberg reports.
Recently, the Biden administration stated that the US is withdrawing sanctions for reasons of national security, despite the fact that Nord Stream 2 and its head Matthias Warnig perform sanctioned activities under US law.
At the same time, Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel welcomed this decision and said that she would discuss Nord Stream 2 with Biden at the G-7 summit next month.
However, some American lawmakers are concerned that lifting sanctions will further tie Western Europe to the Russian Federation, so they criticized Biden.
Context. On May 22, the US Department of the Treasury officially announced the imposition of sanctions on four companies engaged in the Nord Stream 2 project.
After the completion of the Nord Stream 2 launch, the operator of Ukraine's gas transportation system will lose $5-6 billion annually.
