Russia wishes to seize control of the Chişinău airport for the purpose of airlifting troops

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that Russia’s plan to replace the pro-Western leadership of the Republic of Moldova, revealed by Ukrainian security services, was also corroborated by European countries later, according to moldova1.

The Kremlin wants to take control of the Chişinău airport to be able to transport troops and equipment for opening a new front in Ukraine from the Transnistrian region.

According to Zelenskyy, Russia has long been developing a plan to destabilize Moldova. Russia wants to take advantage of the fact that Moldova is not a NATO or EU member state.

Quote"Russia has been planning it for a long time. However, Moldova and Russia share no state border. How would they implement their plan (opening a new front in Ukraine from Moldova — The Page)? Where would they send their troops and equipment from? To do it, the Russians need airports. But there’s only one airport in Moldova now, the one in the capital city of Chişinău. That’s why they would need to use this airport and all the resources of Transnistria," Volodymyr Zelenskyy explained.

Zelenskyy gave this information to Moldovan President Maia Sandu. The prime minister of Moldova, Dorin Recean, confirmed Russia’s plan that concerns Moldova and asserted that the authorities were ready to intervene. According to him, Moldova has significantly increased its capabilities after the attempts to destabilize the country last fall, so the authorities are now ready "for various scenarios directed against the security of the Republic of Moldova."

Quote"I emphasize once again: our aim is to ensure peace and stability in the country, including the region on the left bank of the Dniester. The Republic of Moldova stands for peaceful settlements of the Transnistrian conflict, and we need to reconcile our aims concerning peace and security," the prime minister added.

Context. Earlier, it was reported that Russia was planning an invasion of the Republic of Moldova in early 2023, but the implementation of this plan depends on the course of events in Ukraine.
