The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has expanded the list of possible side effects of the Vaxzevria coronavirus vaccine produced by AstraZeneca. The list now includes a rare neurological disorder—Guillain-Barré syndrome, Reuters reports.
This disease can lead to muscle weakness and numbness of the legs or arms. A severe condition can lead to almost complete paralysis.
The regulator has established a causal relationship between the vaccine and the disorder. As of July 31, it was identified in 833 people out of a total of 592 million people vaccinated with AstraZeneca in the world.
The EMA classified the side-effect as "very rare"—with the lowest frequency of occurrence.
Additionally. In July, the European regulator added Guillain-Barré syndrome on the list of rare side effects from Johnson & Johnson's vaccine. Both drugs are vector vaccines that have also been linked to blood clot formation in persons vaccinated with them.
Recall that Ukrainians are vaccinated with the following vaccines:
- British-Swedish AstraZeneca;
- Chinese Sinovac (CoronaVac);
- American-German Pfizer (BioNTech);
- American Moderna.
