Governmental and non-governmental mine action operators have recovered more than 200,000 hectares of agricultural land for cultivation since the beginning of 2023. The report was published by the Ministry of Economy.
"Even now, in winter, our deminers survey 3,000 to 5,000 hectares of agricultural land every week. As of today, more than 200,000 hectares of the 470,000 hectares of land that we have planned to survey, clear, and demine as a matter of priority have already been returned to farmers," said Yuliia Svyrydenko, First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy of Ukraine.
According to Svyrydenko, the government and its international partners are stepping up their work in mine action for the next 10 years. Their ultimate goal is to return up to 80% of the country’s potentially contaminated territory to safe use.
As of December 15, 2023, explosive technicians have surveyed 268,600 hectares (663,725 acres) of agricultural land out of the 470,000 hectares planned for priority survey and clearance. This includes about 205,000 hectares (~506,500 acres) recovered for use. More than 5,000 hectares have been surveyed in the last week alone. The largest part, or 3,800 hectares, is located in the Kherson region.
