Germany has extended lockdown and tightened restrictions

On January 5, Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel announced new measures that will be in effect until at least January 31 after Britain had introduced the third lockdown since the start of the pandemic due to a new coronavirus strain.

Merkel said that the isolation regime extension in Germany implies "drastic" measures, writes Reuters.

"We need to further reduce contacts, because we saw that we have not been able to reduce the incidence over the past few weeks as much as we would like to," Merkel told reporters after meeting with the leaders of 16 federal states of Germany.

For the first time, the rules will restrict travel. These include restrictions on movement of residents in regions with coronavirus infection high levels. Movement is limited to a radius of 15 km in regions where the number of new COVID-19 cases exceeds 200 per 100,000 inhabitants during a seven-day period.

There were also restrictions on meetings. Only one family member was allowed to meet with only one person.

The new measures also include tight restrictions on meetings and appointments. Now it is allowed to invite only one person to visit.
