Petro Kotin, President of the National Nuclear Energy Generating Company "Energoatom", says that the Ukrainian military is aware of the need to detour the Zaporizhzhia NPP in the course of the long-awaited offensive to avoid damaging the facility.
According to Kotin, Ukraine must keep the plant intact even though it is occupied by the Russians. He explained that the nuclear power plant can be regained without using force by simply cutting off the facility’s supply lines.
"There’s no need to use force. We just need to cut off the supply line between the Zaporizhzhia NPP and Crimea. What we need to do is reclaim Melitopol and then disrupt the supply chain," he said.
The company’s president added that the invaders would be encircled by Ukrainian forces, which would intercept the enemy’s only line of retreat to Crimea.
"This means that they will only have two options: surrender or retreat," he added.
Kotin also said that the Russians have been evacuating people from the nearby city of Enerhodar for the past ten days, adding that they could also evacuate a part of the plant’s personnel. He explained that for the plant to work, it needs to have enough staff for at least five shifts.
Kotin acknowledged that the situation was critical but said the risk of a large-scale disaster remained low.
"The Russians are sick, but not that sick. They still have nuclear power engineers from Rosatom who worked as operators of nuclear power plants, so technically, these people know what the risks are," he added.
