As the new Black Sea corridor is working quite successfully, some call for renewed direct container shipping to the ports of Greater Odesa. "The probability for this should be assessed positively," said Dmytro Honcharov, Executive Director at Lukro LLC, in an interview with .
He added that the Association of International Freight Forwarders of Ukraine is currently working on this, and stakeholders include shipping companies willing to operate these routes. "As the process is still in the coordination stage, I cannot provide more details," the expert explained.
In any case, it may take months to proceed from initial agreements to the beginning of operations. This includes choosing the place for operation (selecting a terminal) and the principles of interaction between the parties.
Another important issue is risk assessment. There is already an established practice of covering maritime war risks. However, there are neither tariffs nor solutions for war risks on the dock in Ukrainian territory.
This risk is not covered outside Odesa as well, Honcharov noted. "If a missile hits a freight train in the west of the country or a container at a terminal in a Danube port, the situation is similar. As I see it, the contractor (container carrier, terminal owner) would refer to force majeure, that is, the cargo would be lost for its owner. By the way, a similar risk exists for all cargoes, be it grain, metal, or oil in tanks," the expert said.
