The United States authorities warn their citizens against travel to Ukraine for two key reasons: because of the spreading coronavirus infection and the danger from the Russian Federation. Americans are also advised to remain vigilant about "crime and civil unrest."

Quote"U.S. citizens should be aware of reports that Russia is planning for significant military action against Ukraine. U.S. citizens are also reminded the security conditions, particularly along Ukraine’s borders, in Russia-occupied Crimea, and in Russia-controlled eastern Ukraine, are unpredictable and can deteriorate with little notice. U.S. citizens choosing to travel to Ukraine should be aware that Russian military action anywhere in Ukraine would severely impact the U.S. Embassy’s ability to provide consular services, including assistance to U.S. citizens in departing Ukraine," is stated in a report on the website of the US Embassy in Ukraine.

The White House clarified that they did not change the assessment of the level of threat for U.S. citizens who intend to travel to Ukraine. Jen Psaki, a Spokesperson for the US Presidential Administration, clarified that the text of the warning included a threat from the RF that continues amassing troops near the Ukrainian border.

Context. On December 7, US and Russian Presidents Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin held the first conversation since July. The main subject of the talks was Russia's military activity on the border with Ukraine. The digital meeting of the leaders lasted two hours and was held via a secure video link. Following the summit, the White House and the Kremlin each announced their own version of the talks outcomes.
