A Ukrainian war veteran and head of the NGO Yakisne Suspilstvo Todor Panovsky says he survived an assassination attempt connected to his role in the case against Russian State Duma deputy Magomed Gadzhiev, accused of sponsoring terrorism and supporting Russia’s war against Ukraine.
The activist, sentenced in absentia in Russia to eight years in prison, has been pushing for Gadzhiev’s prosecution in Kyiv. According to him, Gadzhiev financed militants in the occupied Donbas and co-authored laws enabling Crimea’s annexation.
He claims that after refusing a bribe to abandon the case, an assassin was sent to kill him.
"The SBU detained the hitman," the activist said, adding that he believes the attack was organized to halt the court process.
The activist called on European nations to stop sheltering Russian elites involved in war crimes and announced the creation of a new international civic platform to help locate and prosecute Russian officials and collaborators involved in war crimes.
