The North Ukrainian Nuclear Research Hub will be built in the Kyiv region

Municipal authorities in Slavutych, a city purpose-built for the evacuated personnel of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, plan to build the North Ukrainian Nuclear Research Hub.

The announcement was made by the press service of the Energoatom National Nuclear Energy Generating Company.

The purpose of the hub is to create the conditions for the development of the scientific and business components of the nuclear industry, as well as to work out green energy solutions for Ukraine.

The hub will help R&D institutes, educational institutions, and energy companies join their efforts to design new nuclear power plants, address the challenges of their safe operation, and develop ancillary infrastructure.

The North Ukrainian Nuclear Research Hub will operate on the premises of the Slavutych Center for Professional Development.

Furthermore, the creation of the hub will boost the development of the Chornobyl NPP, the search for ways to use the exclusion zone in the future, and the development of green energy based on the closed NPP. It will also help consider projects for storing and disposing of nuclear waste produced by Ukrainian nuclear power plants.

Earlier, Energoatom announced that it had prepared the bidding documents for building two new power units at the Khmelnytskyi NPP. The new АР1000 reactors will be installed by the U.S.-based company Westinghouse.
